Fractional CTO · Malaysia

Fractional CTO for Malaysian scale-ups.

Technical decisions outgrowing the team and deadlines slipping? Senior technical judgement for founders and boards across Malaysia, without a full-time executive hire. Former CTO and COO, and founder of my own consultancy for over fifteen years.

Part of Fractional CTO in South East Asia. GMT+8 coverage for scale-ups across Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

When founders call

Four situations I am usually brought into

  • You are building for more than one market at once

Malaysian products rarely stay Malaysian. Multi-currency, multi-language and cross-border data handling get bolted on late and expensively unless someone makes the call early.

  • Engineering is split across states or borders

A team spread between KL, Penang, Johor and an offshore partner needs one person reading committed scope against shipped work, and writing down what is actually true.

  • Data protection obligations are catching up with you

The Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709) and the JPDP's current guidance set expectations your systems have to meet in practice, not on paper. That is a technical review, not a policy document.

  • Regional or international investors are about to look

Diligence finds what it finds. Knowing it first, with a sequenced plan attached, beats discovering it in a data room halfway through a raise.

How the engagement works

Working with Malaysian clients

  • MYT working hours

MYT holds GMT+8 with no daylight saving, so the UK gap is seven hours in summer and eight in winter and the overlap window never moves on your side. Personal data work runs against the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709) and the JPDP's current guidance, treated as an engineering and governance question rather than legal advice.

  • Remote-first delivery

Fixed weekly contact, board attendance by video, and written reporting your team and your investors can both act on — the same standard applied to UK clients.

  • On-site where it counts

Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor or wherever the team sits: on-site time is available where a board or team genuinely needs it, arranged and costed per engagement.

No lock-in, and no interest in staying longer than the business needs me. When you are ready to bring the role in-house, I help you hire well and step back.

What founders say

Engaging Tim as an advisor was one of the best decisions we made for our company. Tim brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and a fresh perspective to the boardroom. He has helped us to make better strategic decisions, improved our governance and brought valuable connections to the table.
Steve KellyFounder, EntireAI
I highly recommend Tim Ng and Scryla Consultancy to any company seeking technical analysis or development process strategic advice. Tim's expertise and professionalism are second to none, and his contributions to Tahdah Verified Ltd have been invaluable.

Questions

Malaysia FAQs

Do you work with companies based in Malaysia?
Yes. Engagements run remote by default, with fixed weekly contact and board attendance by video. On-site time in Malaysia is available where it changes the outcome, arranged and costed per engagement.
Are you based in Malaysia?
No. I am based in Manchester, UK today with the intention of relocating to the region. I would rather state that plainly than present a service area as a local office.
Which parts of Malaysia do you cover?
The whole country on the same remote-first basis. Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley have their own page because that is where most enquiries come from; Penang, Johor and elsewhere are covered identically.
What sectors do you know?
Fintech, iGaming and gambling, digital health, SaaS, data and agencies. Those are sectors I have run technology and operations in, not sectors I have read about.
How is this different from a non-executive director role?
A fractional CTO works inside the business, owning technical decisions and leading the team. A non-executive director sits outside it, holding the executive to account and giving the board independent assurance. I keep the two separate and will say which one you actually need.

Building in Malaysia?

Tell me about the business, the stage it is at, and what is worrying you. I will tell you plainly whether I am the right person, and what I would look at first.
