Why a Fractional CTO?

Fractional CTOs are far more common-place than they used to be.

Why?

Technology is a key differentiator for most businesses – implemented correctly it could be the key between growth and success or stagnation and failure.

While fractional CTOs are usually associated with start-ups, in recent years businesses are recognising the value that a part-time CTO can add. Now even larger companies are embracing their use. It has become clear to many that a fractional CTO can fulfil many of the same responsibilities as a full-time one i.e.

  1. Define a technology strategy that is aligned and compliments the business strategy.

  2. Ensure the company is using the right technologies and processes.

  3. Implement standards and guidelines.

  4. Architect a product that is secure and scalable.

  5. Define the in-house / outsourced team and processes.

  6. Act as turnaround agent. Fractional CTOs are often used when there are challenges with an existing development team. Maybe they are missing deadlines or shipping product with unacceptable levels of bugs. A fractional CTO can come in to help figure out what is needed and how to adjust in order to turnaround troubled situations.

  7. Coach and Mentor teams and individuals.

The fractional CTO is well suited to taking on challenges, they can draw on a breadth of very current experience. A fractional CTO can provide an outside perspective to your current technological strategy. Allows the team to gain experience from a different perspective.

Ultimately, a fractional CTO can provide assurance and expertise. Support both the executive board and the development teams themselves.

Investing in your technology and teams is expensive and necessary to succeed. But without the right guidance your teams will be like a ship without a captain – they will sail the ship in any direction you point but are likely to make the wrong choices, be unable to navigate to avoid hazards, foresee perilous weather or run aground due to lack of knowledge and experience.
